The ocean makes Kauai Lagoons Golf Club's Kiele Moana Course a must-see

LIHUE, Kauai, Hawaii -- Kauai Lagoons Golf Club is the only Jack Nicklaus-designed course on Kauai and home of the longest stretch of continuous oceanfront holes in Hawaii.

The club, part of the Kauai Lagoons Marriott Resort in Lihue, reopened the Kiele Moana nine, one of the Hawaiian Islands' most spectacular spots for golf, in late 2011.

Jack Nicklaus and his design team personally oversaw the renovations of the Kiele Moana (Moana is Hawaiian for "to the ocean"), which included three brand new holes -- No. 1-No.3 -- the installation of new TifEagle bermuda greens that have less grain to their roll, plus white, silica sand bunkers.

The ocean-stretch begins at the fourth hole's green that overlooks the ocean. The next four holes -- three par 4s and a par 3 -- play along the oceanside. Perhaps the most remarkable shot is the par-3 fifth, which requires a carry over the ocean to the green up to 200 yards away.

The Kiele Moana is paired with the Kiele Mauka nine (Mauka meaning "to the mountain") and features its own variety of more inland holes that play through dense vegetation at points. From the championship tees, the Kiele Moana and Mauka add up to 7,120 yards and a 76.1/140 slope/rating.
