50 years: Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Kohala Coast celebrates great golf, solid resort
Fifty years after it opened, its scenic setting still causes guests to fall for Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The 252-room hotel looks brand new all over again thanks to a multi-million-dollar renovation. And scenic Mauna Kea Golf Course -- a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that Rees Jones restored in 2008 -- is among the best golf courses in Hawaii.
... full article »Kona C.C. comeback: Renovated Ocean Course on the Big Island is scheduled to reopen this summer
The long process to renovate the Ocean Course at Kona Country Club on the Big Island appears to be nearing an end. The shuttered club should open no later than August now that a new irrigation system is in place on the Ocean Course, architect John Sanford said. Sanford's team has updated bunkers, repaved cart paths, leveled fairways, improved tee boxes and is in the process of planting new landscaping.

Enjoying the 27-hole Hawaii Prince Golf Club on Oahu is as simple as A-B-C. Each of the three nines -- named A, B and C -- are wonderfully playable and well conditioned. The sun shines on this leeward side of the island almost constantly, serving up perfect tropical weather for those mainlanders who come to escape their snow-bound homes. And it's one of the rare courses that's popular with locals and tourists, mainly because it's affordable and fun to play.

The Royal is the more challenging of the two golf courses at Kaanapali, but many locals prefer to play the Kai Course. Why? They have more fun on the Kai. For less skilled players, families and certainly players who don't hit it as far, the Kai fits the bill. And in terms of views, the Kai Course holds its own, too. Mike Bailey has more from Maui.

Seashore paspalum now covers the fairways, greens and tees. Green surrounds were reshaped. New white Silica sand from Vietnam created bunkers that visually pop against a panoramic backdrop and spectacular cliff-top views of the Pacific come from five superb holes.

What's not to like about the King? Great conditioning, a superb layout and views as good as almost anywhere in the world. Honestly, King Kamehameha Golf Club rivals the Plantation Course at Kapalua, and that's saying a lot. As for scenery, it doesn't get any better than King. Laid out along the side of the West Maui Mountains, you also get panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean as well.

Pacific Links International has purchased five golf courses on Oahu within the past three years -- Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, Kapolei, Olomana Golf Links and the West and East Courses at Makaha Valley Country Club. The Canadian company, formed in 2009, is also finalizing the purchase of the two Ka'anapali courses on Maui and continues shopping for more.
